Spain, often synonymous with salmon-skinned Brits out on the piss with their shorts dragging around their ankles and half a pint of beer spilled over their head by their friend “Derek” who is cacking himself laughing behind a taxi wearing a Chelsea shirt with “Tosser” written on the back. Fortunately, the Festival of Benicassim (now in its 18th year) seems to repel those kind of backwash.
Instead, people with a genuine taste in music, a rather unhealthy obsession with the beach, a pocket full of cash to spend on cold beverages and lungs full to scream at their idols, flock to the small town of Benicassim on the Costa Azahar in July for 4 days of fun in the sun. Having boasted such bookings over the years as The Jesus & Mary Chain, Orbital, Sonic Youth, Primal Scream, Suicide and Spiritualized (who just dropped their latest album last month), the festival is set to keep up their reputation of high standards with the current 2012 line-up.
Fresh from their newly acquired reunion The Stone Roses headline the festival alongside veteran folk legend Bob Dylan who never seems to slow in his touring schedule. Dizzie Rascal, Bat For Lashes (wonder if Scott Walker will make an appearance), reunited At The Drive In and Kurt Vile & The Violators who have been on an endless touring schedule since “Smoke Ring For My Halo” propelled them into the limelight. Joined by such notable royalty as Robyn Hitchcock, Buzzcocks, New Order and Crystal Castles the festival has done a great job of mixing styles and accommodating everyone’s tastes.
With the Spanish sun beating down, and bands lashing away on stage meters from the beach, its no wonder that Benicassim has lasted the 18 years and seems to be gaining momentum with every passing summer.
